Kathleen lived in a cottage that she was renting from her Great Auntie Mildred.
Mildred was the whole reason I was dressed and jeweled up like I was and attending the ball this evening. Makes her sound like some sort of fairy godmother, which is far from the reality of it. She more fits the model of a life-sucking, cackling old wicked step-witch!
But more on that creature later.
Reaching the small stone-built cottage, which sits above the road on a hill, my brother sounded the horn then got out and opened the back car door.
The cottage has a long porch, with wooden steps that leads down onto a series of stones steps cut into the hill as an entrance, and exit, way.
Soon Kathleen appeared on the porch and waved down to us.
Kathleen was what most lads would call ‘a looker’.
She is a vivacious long haired blonde with the most amazing blue sapphire colored eyes. She stands about two inches taller than me, still a full 3 inches shorter than my brother.
Her long silky platinum hair was worn up in a sweeping elegant bun held with a long silver leaf-shaped clip of diamonds on one side. Several strands of hair purposely fell alongside her tanned face, adding a rather far too cute effect.
Her purse was a shimmery silver coloured mesh clutch. On her feet were silver sandals with rhinestone straps. I was thankful Kathleen was not wearing heels, I already felt short enough standing with her.
She wore a smashing, off one shoulder, thin silk gown of lavender The shimmery gown really had a nice sexy flow as she moved. Long elbow-length gloves of a dark blue satin to finish the effect.
She was wearing pierced diamond earrings, that had large pear-shaped diamonds, surrounded by smaller diamonds, with large round diamonds that held the affair to her earlobes. A magnificent five-row diamond choker, matching cuff bracelets on each wrist and two sapphire cocktail rings on the same fingers like mine.
All her jewels were also loaned by Mildred.
Kathleen has been my fast friend since the first form, even making it through university with me.
Though her Auntie Mildred could not see why girls attended university” simply was unheard of in my day!” She would declare shaking her head primly.
Not entirely sure why we have always been ‘thicke as thieves ‘ for we are two very different personalities. I’m more on the bookish side, Kathleen is more on a perpetual, ‘living life large’, side.
My brother left the car and, like the gentleman he usually was not, met her at the top of the hill and escorted her down. Then as I slid over, helped her inside next to me in the back. We both hugged and then cooed over how simply gorgeous we both looked.
For the record, both of the dresses we wore were a far different look than we originally were supposed to have that evening, and it was a change that her Auntie Mildred knew nothing about.
And in the next chapter, I will explain why that is…
