Eight Amazon Class frigates were built. When the Falklands War started, seven of them took part on the operations to reclaim the Islands.
They were widely used for shore bombardment operations and escort missions.
When the British made a landfall at San Carlos, HMS Ardent was hit by bombs dropped by Argentine aircraft on 21 May and was completely destroyed by fire. The aluminium used on the ship burned at extremely high temperatures, making it impossible to save the ship.
HMS Antelope was also hit by bombs on 23 May, one of which was set off by the bomb disposal team attempting to defuse it, causing the ship to catch fire and setting off her magazines.
The remaining ships were sold after the war to Pakistan, being known as the Tariq Class.
