Sexy wild bannanas: why cultivation works (sometimes)

We eat bananas with tiny seeds but wild bananas contain large seeds from which new plants can grow. Cultivated bananas are parthenocarpic (no sex, no pollination) in which the flesh of the fruit swells and ripens without its seeds being fertilized. Lacking viable seeds, farmers must plant portions of its underground stem (called a corm) to produce new plants. Costa Rica.
