Female foeticide is the act of aborting a foetus because it is female. The frequency is estimated from the observed high ratio of boys to girls at birth. Although it is illegal in India to determine or disclose sex of the foetus the law is frequently broken and it is poorly enforced by authorities.
Female foeticide has also been reported in many other countries such as China, Pakistan, Vietnam, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.
